3D Printed Chain Link Bag

With the growing accessibility of 3D print manufacturing in the current world, I wanted to leverage the advantages of 3D printing as a tool to create dimensional surface textures on a practical product.

3D printing has been in use by many designers to create apparel, footwear, and accessories, I created a printable bag with linked chains to reflect and explore the usage of technology in fashion.

Inspiration

The idea of 3D printed chains particularly stood out to me because the links can be printed together in place directly to be moving parts. An entire design is printed and assembled in one process. I wanted to create a faceted dimensional surface finish to the chains to give it more detail and interest.

Structural Prototypes

Using plastic connectable chains, I tried out a series of structural connections to hold and embrace the fabric pouch.

Surface Finishes

I explored various surface patterns and textures on a single chain using Grasshopper.

3D Printing Process

By strategically positioning the chains together, I printed the chains together without support, as the support material would ruin the surface texture of the chains.

Chain Necklace

Using this test print, I made it into a chain necklace for myself.

Chain Link Bag

The chain bag is made of 62 links. The are positioned and printed together in one print job. Various color choices can be customized by the consumer.
